Smoking, Pregnancy, and Infertility

Smoking during pregnancy is the most important modifiable risk factor associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. It is associated with 5 percent of infant deaths, 10 of preterm births, and 30 percent of small for gestational age infants.

In addition, smoking and secondhand smoke exposure increases the risk of infertility, placental abruption, preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), and placenta previa.

Despite the known harmful effects of smoking on the health of mothers and their children, it is estimated that 22 percent of American women of reproductive age smoke cigarettes. Overall estimates of smoking rates during pregnancy vary based on the method of data collection; the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) survey reported a prevalence of 14 percent in 2005 in the United States. When analyzed by state, the prevalence of smoking anytime during pregnancy ranged from 6 percent in Utah to 36 percent in West Virginia. The exact prevalence of smoking during pregnancy is difficult to discern, not only because of incomplete records, but also because most studies rely on self-reported smoking behavior and are therefore subject to underreporting.

Impaired fetal oxygen delivery is the best-studied cause of adverse outcome in pregnant women who smoke. Pathologic evaluations of the placentas of smokers have shown structural changes, including a reduction in the fraction of capillary volume and increased thickness of the villous membrane when compared to nonsmokers. Both of these factors may contribute to abnormal gas exchange within the placenta. Exposure to cigarette smoke also acutely decreases intervillous perfusion, possibly via nicotine-induced vasospasm. Another problem is that carbon monoxide exposure from smoking causes the formation of carboxyhemoglobin, which has multiple effects on systemic and fetal oxygen delivery.

Smoking may also result in direct damage to fetal genetic material. One study compared the chromosomal instability of amniocytes from smokers and non-smokers, and noted an increased incidence of structural chromosomal abnormalities among women who smoked regularly. Most of these abnormalities were the result of deletions or translocations, and many were localized to the 11q23 region, which is also associated with several hematologic malignancies.

Other possible mechanisms responsible for adverse fetal outcomes in mothers who smoke include direct toxicity of the more than 2500 substances found in cigarettes, such as ammonia, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, hydrogen cyanide, vinyl chloride, nitrogen oxide, and carbon monoxide. In addition, there are over 4000 chemicals in mainstream tobacco smoke, which is drawn through the tobacco column and exits through the mouthpiece during puffing. The number of compounds emitted in tobacco smoke may actually exceed 100,000.

Animal models suggest that nicotine can directly impair lung development due to interaction with nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR). Prenatal nicotine exposure also can blunt the cardiorespiratory response to postnatal hypoxemia in sheep. Similarly, term human infants with significant cotinine levels at delivery are limited in their ability to maximize and vary their heart rate during the first four hours of life.

Finally, exposure to nicotine results in sympathetic activation leading to acceleration of fetal heart rate and a reduction in fetal breathing movement. While the consequences of these changes are not well understood, both of these parameters are used as indicators of fetal well-being.

The negative impact of cigarette smoking on fetal health is well established. Cigarette smoking has been associated with numerous adverse outcomes, including spontaneous pregnancy loss, placental abruption, PPROM, placenta previa, preterm labor and delivery, low birth weight (LBW), and ectopic pregnancy. While the pathophysiology is not completely understood, as discussed above, several possible mechanisms related to impaired gas exchange, direct toxicity, and sympathetic activation have been proposed.

Although smoking cessation during pregnancy is of maximal benefit if it occurs early in the first trimester, quitting at any time during pregnancy can have some beneficial effects. For women unable to quit smoking, reducing the number of cigarettes smoked still has maternal and fetal benefits.

Linn Ds – Free Your Music

Whilst a compact disc is still a major method of storing sound recordings, it is certainly not the only way to retain a physical storage medium for audio compilations and even though CD’s are still an extremely popular vehicle for audio storage, CD players are no longer considered to be the best method for listening to you audio entertainment.

In 1982, when the very first compact discs became available, CD’s and CD players offered significant benefits over vinyl records (which suffered from scratches, noise feedback and fragility) and record players, and for over 25 years cd players have played an important role in our musical enjoyment.

Although, CD players were the best alternative of the time, a quarter of a century and technology has moved on considerably and, unfortunately, at least for CD players, they are no longer the impressive product that they were once considered to be.

Linn Digital Stream players (DS) are the fresh faced kids on the block and offer many advantages over their CD player counterpart.

Linn DS players are able to reproduce music with less background noise, which gives a truer recreation of an original audio performance and whilst CD players are something of a one trick pony (only able to play CD’s), DS players can form the centre of your whole home entertainment system, where the quality of digital TV audio, games console audio, downloads (including ripped CD’s), as well as, audio CD’s can be, not only, played, but, the quality will be enhanced by filtration of background noise and distortion, which will, even, improve your old 45’s and 78’s.

DS players can store entire music libraries on its own hard drive and permits easy access to play lists and album art and from differing origins; MP3, CD, PC and vinyl record collections.

Linn precision engineers have spent 36 years at the forefront of audio perfection, which is ten years longer than the oldest CD has been in existence and with the innovative DSi player, Linn has created a product which will move with the times, but, will be an essential device for current audiophiles.

A Linn DSi players replacing a CD player as the listening method of choice for home entertainment systems, is the natural progression of audio requirements for tomorrow as well as today, and is available from Rococo System and Design.

Jay Z Dynasty Roc La Familia 2000 Rap Music CD Review

Not sure what’s happening with me on this one, but it seems like the more I listen to it, the better Dynasty Roc La Familia 2000 gets. Dynasty Roc La Familia 2000 put simply is one of Jay Z’s best CDs to date.

This CD grabs your attention right out of the gate with Change The Game and doesn’t let go until the very last note of the very last song Where Have You Been, which by the way is another great track.

Jay Z possesses the characteristic of being able to win you over with him talent alone. The kind of artist I really enjoy listening to.

Overall Dynasty Roc La Familia 2000 is an outstanding release. What I call must have music. I give it two thumbs up and is most definitely a worthy addition to any Rap collection. Truly an outstanding Rap CD. One of those that is completely void of any wasted time, as each track is simply superb.

While the entire CD is really very good some of my favorites are track 3 – I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me), track 9 – Guilty Until Proven Innocent, and track 16 – Where Have You Been

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 2 – Change The Game. Outstanding!

Mystery Jets Tickets Available for UK Tour 2010

Mystery Jets is an English five-piece indie band, formerly based on Eel Pie Island in Twickenham, London. The band’s first line-up consisted of Blaine Harrison on drums, William Rees on guitar and Henry Harrison (Blaine’s father) on bass. Henry became a second guitarist in the band and they were joined by Kai Fish on bass and Tamara Pearce-Higgins on keyboards. The Eel Pie Island EP was recorded soon after by bishopdante at Rooster studios, from which it became obvious that a period of touring would be required to develop tightness and material, and so a white van with a trailer was bought, and the Mystery Jets set off. Mystery Jets issued its first proper single, a limited edition 7″ of “Zoo Time”, on Transgressive Records. The Mystery Jets ran a series of illegal parties on Eel Pie Island, attracting large crowds, before being shut down by the police. They went on to sign to 679 Recordings. After 2005 saw a number of singles and their TV debut on MTV TWO’s Spanking New Music Week, the start of 2006 saw the band gain their highest charting single with “The Boy Who Ran Away”, play the ShockWaves NME Awards Tour and make their first appearance on Top of the Pops.

The band’s debut UK album, Making Dens, was released on 6 March 2006.December 2006 saw the band release “Umbrellahead / Half In Love With Elizabeth” through its MySpace site to competition winners. It was during this time that William Rees began his romantic relationship with Japanese model, Waka Inoue, whom he had met while on tour in Japan in February 2007. The two tracks were produced by Erol Alkan and were meant to be part of a ten-inch vinyl acoustic EP, but that idea was scrapped. Throughout 2007 the band wrote new songs (including “Hand Me Down”, “Pink Elephant” and “Undercover Lover”, the latter two being renamed “Veiled In Grey” and “Hideaway” and all three being included on their album Twenty One) and played more gigs around the world, especially in America where they released their debut album Zootime (a collection of tracks from Making Dens, as well as EPs and singles) on 8 May, through Dim Mak Records. Henry Harrison decided to stop playing live with the band shortly afterwards, but is still very much involved and went into the studio with the rest of the band. At the end of 2007 the band went on a short club show across the UK, and released a free Christmas single, “Flakes”.

Their second album, Twenty One, was released on 24 March 2008. Produced by Erol Alkan and mixed by renowned producer Nick Launay, it was preceded by the single “Young Love” featuring Laura Marling, released on 10 March 2008. The second single released from the album was “Two Doors Down”. It reached 24 in the U.K charts, their highest position so far. On Sunday 8 June 2008 the band played at the Scottish RockNess music festival which attracted over 35,000 music lovers – the bands set was broadcast on national UK broadcaster, Hitz Radio. The band also spoke backstage about their rise to fame, reviving the eighties and how they plan to take over the world.

In 2008 Mystery Jets along with (Jeremy Warmsley & Adem) contributed the song “Grains of Sand” to the Survival International charity album Songs for Survival. In January 2009 Mystery Jets left their previous contract with 679 Recordings and signed a new deal with Rough Trade Records. They have begun recording a new album – expected 5 July 2010 – and continue to tour. They are set to perform at the Reading and Leeds Festivals at the end of August 2010.

In April 2010, Mystery Jets announced their third studio album, Serotonin. The album was released on July 5, 2010 and was produced by Chris Thomas. A promotional single, entitled “Flash A Hungry Smile” was made available on the band’s website for free. The first single to be released from the album, “Dreaming Of Another World” was added to BBC Radio 1′s B Playlist in May 2010 and has an expected release of July 2010. On Monday 5th July, Mystery Jets performed an instore session at Rough Trade East for their album release. A limited edition 12″ was released as well as CD format and digital download.

Mystery Jets will be performing in UK this year to promote their new album. They announced several tour dates for UK. Mystery Jets will kick off their tour in Sheffield on October 23, 2010. Sold Out Ticket Market is ideal for Mystery Jets Tickets at nominal rates. Sold Out Ticket Market provides its customers with Mystery Jets Tickets for all dates and venues in which they are going to perform. Ideas for getting my room re-done?

I’m 14, and I was thinking of getting my room re-done. Its currently blue and very matchy. I’m not trying to brag or anything but my room is pretty big.

I was thinking of painting it colour #11 or 12 on that chart.

http://www.archure.net/p/color.jpg

I was also thinking of putting vinyl records or polariods on my wall. I want my room to be original and different.

Any suggestions on how to make it edgy and different than the rest?

I want my room to be maybe even eclectic.

Rare Northern Soul – Experience the Legend

There are only a few occasions in the course of human history when it can be said that the people were completely in charge of their own cultural revolution. No matter what the political or civil agenda was during the late 1960s and early 1970s, looking back on the social norms that were broken, and the unique experiences that were made by people all over the world, you know that kind of time will probably never come again. Because music is so wrapped up in everything that humans do and experience, it’s fitting that the rare northern soul records that became popular during this time would be just as special.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the rare northern soul music or movement, you should know that it was centred on some of the most talented, albeit unknown Motown artists of the 1960s. When many people hear the word “Motown” the automatically assume that this movement took place in Detroit, or some other famous American city, but this assumption is incorrect. In fact, the northern soul genre was named and developed in England around the time that the mod scene was coming to an end.

Those that were in love with the early Motown sound, an upbeat rhythm and light-hearted feel, resisted the transition to funk and rock that came later on in the Sixties. They began pestering record store owners with requests for more of the original stuff, the rarer the better. As a result, record store owners in the U.K. started referring to this type of music as “rare northern soul,” in honour of the customers from the north of England who were most often requesting it. What began as a flippant way to categorize the type of music these customers were likely to buy became the label for a musical movement that spanned multiple decades, and still continues today.

When it came to finding the best rare northern soul, record store owners and disc jockeys really had a difficult job ahead. Instead of merely being able to browse the American charts for the most popular songs and records, they had to look back into the archives for artists and records that had been forgotten or never played. Northern soul enthusiasts to this day still love to find a record that no one else has, or that hasn’t been played in many years. There are plenty of collections that regularly sell for high amounts on auction web sites.

If you are looking for rare soul vinyl look no further than Rare Northern Soul. com where you can buy Northern Soul Music, 70s Soul Music, Motown, crossover soul, oldies soul and rare 45s.

The Morden Dj And Technology

In the djying industry technology has certainly shaken things up a bit. The question is which technology is going to survive and what is going to be extinct. The choice of what medium you choose to use is a hotly debated topic in the industry.

There are 3 main types – vinyl records, cds and the digital dj(those using mp3 files and other digital formats). All formats have their pros and cons take vinyl records for instance they are very reliable, durable but then again they are very heavy and you need a lot of vinyl records to perform a full set at a venue. Cds are relatively very light but they are susceptible to wear and tear especially if you are a busy dj. The digital formats are brilliant as they are very portable and you can carry you whole music collection on a hard drive that can fit in your pocket but where there is technology and computers you know that reliability can be a problem, you always need a backup although this has improved a great deal it’s still not as reliable as vinyl records and turntables.

The side of the argument above is focussed on reliability and portability there is the other argument about skill. You cannot scratch on a cd as easily as you can do with vinyl records although the new cdjs do give vinyl a run for its money. Anyone who has used the pioneer cdj will agree with me, it’s a fantastic piece of kit. Those who use digital media would use digital players which usually come with mixing software that will impress even the most seasoned of djs, now this is convenient but other djs then argue whether its right to automate what is suppose to be about talent, well that is the question? The average party goes is not bother weather a mix is a result of vinyl being mixed by a skilled craftsman or some software they just want good music and a fantastic night.

On the whole technology has helped the industry and a hybrid of technologies is a good point going forward in my view. While technology always has its critics it makes things better. So let’s say you are a dj playing vinyl records including a laptop with some digital music will provide you with a greater selection of music it also enables you to get music that is not available on vinyl as well. The turntables and your laptop will provide redundancy and in the unlikely event that one goes down the party continues with minimal disruption. Technology will help djs but ultimately as every good dj knows nothing replaces the experience gained partying with the best of them.

For – web design in lancashire and djs in blackburn we are the best.

What Are Audio Devices To Different Schools Of Thought

From the old wound-up gramophones to players which produced scratchy tunes when their stylus were applied onto vinyl disks, the world of audio devices has certainly come a long way.  Boom boxes proudly carried over the shoulders of break dance dancers of yesteryears were possible the first portable devices.  As technology got better, circuitry shrunk in size and the portable cassette player was the rage of times.  When CDs were introduced, better quality and longer playing music was finally available to the mass market.  With a portable CD player firmly attached to one’s belt, young people all over were sporting wired headsets.

What are audio devices in this current day and age?  Most players utilize flash disks, no larger than the palm and insignificant in weight.  Available in all shapes, sizes and colors, they boast of different storage capacities able to store thousands of songs.  How anyone can even remember each and every one of those songs is beyond most people’s comprehension.  In the search to merge all devices into a single device, mobile phones which double up as personal assistants, cameras, radios as well as players have become the norm.  There is no longer the need to cart around various devices as most commonly used functionalities are now jammed into one single device.

The above is a mention of the many options of devices at skin deep level.  Going further, what are audio devices in a more technical sense?  They constitute devices or functions which handle sound and voice.  These forms of data exist in analog or digital form depending on their source.  The live voice of a human being is in analog form whereas a robot’s voice is a digitally produced sound.  Audio devices enable sound to be recorded, played and manipulated.  If the CD player on your computer has recording functionalities, you pop in a CD-R to record some songs from your hard disk.  When you play a CD, sound is transmitted from the speakers.  When you speak into a microphone, you record your voice and save it onto a CD-R.  Plug in your headset to listen to songs without disturbing others.

Hidden from plain sight is the computer’s audio card which controls the input and output of sounds. As you can see, your computer comes with a collection of internal and external audio devices.  It’s important to note that every device comes with its own driver.  This piece of software enables the device to be recognized by the computer’s operating system.  Hence a faulty device or driver software may be the cause of an audio device not to work on your computer.  Installing a new piece of audio device to your computer will require installation of its driver if pre-installed ones are not compatible.
