Are speakers/amplifiers for old vinyl players really expensive or hard to find?

My uncle has an old vinyl player from way back in the 70′s. And I need it to play a record I bought (It’s Black flower/Moira Stewart split, if you’re curious. :] ). I don’t normally use vinyl, so I have no idea about the speakers/amplifiers that were thrown away ages ago.

My mom tells me that speakers and amplifiers for old vinyl players are different from normal speakers and extremely expensive these days.
But my mom is a lady who likes making things up and wasn’t into music at any point in her younger days.

So I was wondering you can just use any ordinary speaker for a vinyl player? Or a bass amplifier, if that’s any different?
