What is a good USB Turntable?

My mother wants to rip her old vinyls (33 1/3, 45, and 78 RPM) into MP3s that she can play on an MP3 Player. Can anyone recommend a good USB Turntable that I can get her for Christmas? She has a laptop so recording them through a sound card isn’t an option.

Is it possible to make an old phonograph play new 33′s?

I’ve got a neat old portable phonograph (the wind-up kind) that I just love, but it only plays shellac 78′s from the first half of the century, and I was wondering if I made a few tweaks, would I be able to play a 33 or 45?

Now don’t get me wrong, I know the difference between the new and old records, if I plop down a vinyl record on there and play it with a steel needle, I’ll shred it to ribbons, though I had an idea: I’ve heard it’s possible to slow down the turntable with the break to about 45-33 rpm and if I were to finagle some kind of new needle from a cartridge in the sound box while simultaneously taking some weight off the tonearm (maybe by suspending it with a string?) would that be just crazy enough to work? Or do vinyl records absolutely require electronic amplification? Would the sound be too quiet? What do you think?

If I COULD get it to work, it would be totally awesome…

Has anyone tried this before? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Also I didn’t really know which category to post this in…

Would you call them Albums, LP’S, Records, Phonographs, Vinyls?

Or do you just don’t call them anything at all cause your too hip to admit you know what they are? lol

I find I change the terminology depending on who I’m speaking with. But in general I call em LP’s; even if they are 78′s or 45′s.

Someday I hope to wallpaper a music room with all my LP covers, in a very tactful way so that I can keep the LP’s in them. Kind of like a musical montage of some minor “sound proofing with music”.
edit: my favorite prized possesion is a copy of the original Dead album from the year of release and a mint copy of Women and Children First (VH)

Record player advice, anyone?

I’m having trouble choosing a good record player make; here’s the stuff that I want:

1) able to play 33 1/3, 45, and 78 rpm speeds
2) semi-automatic arm (so that lowering it onto my vinyl won’t feel like a delicate surgical process…)
3) USB, USB, USB!! It’s utterly important that I can transfer my old vinyls onto my computer.
4) Decent sound quality… I’m counting on the converted mp3 files to sound great on my speakers anyway, so I don’t really need audiophile quality direct from the turntable. Still, I want “decent” sound.

Any ideas?

An English Riddle?

An old fashioned 78 vinyl record has a diameter of 12 inches. The outside border is a 1⁄2 inch wide and the distance from there to the central hole is 5 1⁄2 inches. If you put the needle down at the very edge of the playing area, how far will the needle have traveled by the time the music stops? You can assume that there are 83 grooves to the inch.
Hahaha!!! I only copy-pasted this question from another user. i was looking at their answer and was laughing my butt off my chair! too bad the question was unavailable though, couldn’t answer it. good work guys! you proved yourselves…

R&P: If you could press your own custom record, what would it be like?

By record, I mean vinyl record. Nowadays, you could create your own CDs with whatever songs you want on there, and maybe even do some artwork. Even further in the past, you could still do mix tapes, but once you think about it, when was there ever a time that you could press your own custom records unless it was your own album or if you’re a rich producer of some sort?

This is pretty much a question for you guys to have fun a be creative. You don’t have to answer any of these questions listed below, but here’s a couple examples of what you could mention if you get stuck or something or to be even more creative:
-What are the songs on there?
-What is the title of the the record/album?
-What does the cover look like?
-Is there anything special about about the record?
i.e. wax, red, purple, colored, plain black, picture disk, glow in the dark
-How many RPM is it?
i.e. 33 1/3, 45, 78, your own custom number
-What is the size?
i.e. 7″, 10″, 12″, 9″ (like NIN’s Survivalism), you own custom number
-What is the theme of the record?
-Is there anything special about the theme?
i.e. your favorite songs, the worst songs ever made compilation, a song to fit all your moods during mood swings
-Is there any bonus material included with the record?
-What message (or catalog #) is etched on the center of the record?

There’s a couple rulse though: it can’t be more than one record, it has to have a reasonable amount of songs on it for an average record, go ahead an star this if you want and share the fun with others, and have fun

BQ: custom CD or mix tape?
78rpms, those are old fashioned records usually used back before the 60s. The spacing between 33 and 45rpms is a little different and one of them (33 I believe) has the grooves more compressed together.
My record would be a simple black vinyl record, with a white, hand written label. It would be a normal 12″ 33rpm LP just to fit a couple of songs that I know I could survive with in different moods and some that were very important to my life. I would add:
a1, Minor Threat – Minor Threat
a2, Last Nite – The Strokes
a3, Roots Bloody Roots – Sepultura
a4, Shut the Door – Fugazi
b1, Substitute – The Who
b2, Welcome to the Jungle – Guns n’ Roses
b3, Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana
b4, Spooky Couch – Albert Hammond Jr.

I’m pretty sure there’s a few songs I left out that I would like to add, but whatever, I don’t think I’ll remember until a few days later.

How many RPMs does a CD make?

Like the old vinyl records; they came in 33 1/3 RPM, 45 RPM, and 78 RPM. So, just how fast is the revolutions per minute for a music CD?

You have to check out this ladies 78′s collection! She has hundreds on her channel.

Shotgun Willie
