Artist Matthew Brannon’s Art Work and Paintings at the Saatchi Gallery

Matthew Brannon’s work explores the gulf between social ideals and personal crisis. Using screen printing as form of analogue reproduction, Brannon’s images carry both the suggestion of mass replication and aura of original artworks. Directly challenging the void between language and actuality, Brannon often combines text and image to illustrate the potential for dysfunction. In Police Officer Giving Up, Brannon juxtaposes a neutral symbol of a houseplant with a statement of desperation. Exuding the inadequate sentiment of greeting cards, Brannon offers decoration as a feeble mask for emotional depletion.

Matthew Brannon’s How It All Ends he creates an ironic game of semiotics, using an abstracted plant as a visual representation of the accompanied text. Reworking a subject associated with art historical religious paintings, he doesn’t present a fiery Armageddon or cherubic heaven, but rather a bland composition reminiscent of wall paper swatches or gift shop stamps. The image is compelling through its crafted elegance, creating a blithe meditative focus. In confronting the spiritual, Brannon offers a bereft philosophy, conceiving the human condition with disappointment and chagrin.

Matthew Brannon’s work investigates media imagery as a cultural interface, exploring the gap between expectation and inadequacy. Using topical problems such as substance abuse, body image, and class divide as metaphors for social and psychological fractioning, Brannon pits visual ‘ideals’ versus internalised corruption to create conceptual instances of breakdown. In Hair of the Dog, Brannon’s clip art-style motif reduces the idea of individuality to an infinitely replicable generic. Coupled with a cynical script typeset in ornamental font his blossoms become emblematic of disease, addiction, and futility.Matthew Brannon’s prints convey a poetic distillation. Conjuring a complete image from the most meagre information, the ‘messaging’ of Brannon’s images is transferred through their subtlety of form. Situated between luxurious refinement and divested replication, Brannon adopts the associations of design to comment on psychology as by-product of consumer environment. In Sick Whore, Brannon underscores a spindly plant with an abject description or insult. Embossed with the finality of an epitaph, Brannon sums up a totality of a frail, abused, and embarrassing existence.

Matthew Brannon’s HYENA is presented as a vinyl LP atop a plinth. Illustrating the effectiveness of packaging over content, the object exudes a precious quality as product and collectable. The recording itself, however is much more sinister. Featuring a caged hyena at a Berlin zoo, the soundtrack captures a disturbing symphony of clattering metal, audience rumblings, and breaking bones, beneath an aria of the animal’s frantic bark-laughter. In this discrepancy between outward appearance and contained turmoil, Brannon creates a haunting analogy for tenuity of human experience.Matthew Brannon adapts his eel motif as a logo of power and class divide. The image itself contains multiple symbolism: as loathsome viper, lowly animal, and revolutionary icon of early America. Rendered in black and white, the delicate pattern is reminiscent of both lace and tire tracks. Humorously recalling the colonial motto “Don’t Tread On Me”, Brannon’s snake supplants ideas of freedom liberation as an elitist decal of ‘good taste’.

Learn More About The Changing Face Of The Music Industry

The face of music has always been changing, from the days of Mozart to Buddy Holly there has only been one constant factor remaining consistent throughout the centuries, the music industry is a commercial medium. The musical revolutionaries of the 60s might well disagree however even at that point people were buying records and labels were making millions.

This is more true than ever in this day and age, where musical instruments have been replaced by grinding women in bikinis, low riding Cadillacs and more bling than you can shake a stick. The changing face of music is not only in the image and artists but also in the musical equipment used to produce and distribute music.

Musical piracy as it is being called, is dominating the music industry and there are two schools of thought on it. One being that of the music industry and the law who understand the illegal sharing and distribution of music as copyright infringement, the other being the people who believe that music should be free to everyone, however it is not clear how they are suggesting that the Cadillacs and bling are going to be financed.

This has come due to the massive technological advances in the last decade in the field of musical technology. The face of music has changed due to the accessibility of musical production and distribution. You can now at a click access your favourite music legally and free of charge via various video hosting sites and it is a massive form of marketing now.

Production takes place in many a bedroom and have become very accessible to those with very little musical knowledge due to the relatively simple midi based software packages that have saturated the market. These have made music production much more accessible than previously and with many global forums you can share your music and potentially distribute it with great ease.

The digital age has rendered other formats almost obsolete. As the CD killed off the cassette in one foul swoop, CD is now on the edge of extinction being replaced by an array of audio files. The death of CDs has been slower than the predeceasing format, this might be accounted for because the retailers buying from the music industry still need to sell products and there has been no next generation product that can be bought over the counter to replace CDs.

The retailers are encouraging people to buy CDs and then rip them onto their iPod or MP3 players. It is thought that CDs will stick around for a while. The greatest surviving format has to be vinyl which is still massively popular with DJs around the globe. This again is under attack by products such as the Tonium Pacemaker, which is the size of a Nintendo DS, however holds 120gig, about 3000 hours work of music.

Richard Pryor R.I.P. He Made A Damned Big Difference

Something I Said
Richard Pryor
Dwight Hobbes
Insight News archives

It’s difficult to fathom how widely Richard Pryor will remembered for his pioneering genius.  One thing for certain, he’s revered by those who follow in his footsteps. In 2003, the film  Richard Pryor: I Ain’t Dead Yet, #*%$#@!!, showed even giants like Chris Rock, Robin Williams and Bernie Mac as well as notables like Mos Def, Margaret Cho and George Lopez regard him as an immortal.  And Pryor had been retired for two years, out of the big time since as far back as 1989, when the documentary was filmed.  Yet, to much of white America he was a nothing but an uppity, foul-mouth, joke telling you-know-what.  And it’s doubtful many of today’s young black youngsters know his work.

Pryor was an institution. As much a revolutionary national hero to black America since the 70s as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and the rest of them have always been to white America.  He utilized high-profile entertainment as grassroots activism and his impact did not cease resounding — from the impossible success of his first album with title about being crazy to this very day, when his influence is stamped on such stars as Eddie Murphy, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Chris Tucker and more.  Pryor set the model with street savvy irreverence and sheer artistic power the likes of which may well never be seen again (there are, after all, only so many Gil Scott-Herons, James Baldwins and Paul Robesons to go around).  He made history, daring to call America on its vicious and virulent racism, making himself beloved in the process.  And he wasn’t some affirmative action poster child token mainstream white folk gave their all-empowering blessings.  Black people put Brother Richard on the map (thank God, he always knew and never forgot that).  We  were the ones who bought so many copies of his records (this is back when they had vinyl) that even store owners who hated his spirited stand still stocked him on the shelves and rang up sales at that cash register.  Even if they bitched about it all the way home after closing up shop.

From jump, he wasn’t just a comic.  He helped the everyday black man and woman of his era, the person on the street, hold his and her head up no less than did Malcolm X. He clearly was one of us.  He talked like us, thought like us and, like those of us with sense, didn’t give a good goddam who didn’t like it.  The 1974 album, by the way, won a Grammy and went gold — one helluvan accomplishment for a comedy album in those days.  There’s a reason I’m not quote the album’s title — it’s to respect that Richard Pryor stopped using the infamous epithet that starts with an N.  When Pryor returned from performing in Africa, he felt such respect for black humanity he struck from his act even the traditionally affectionate use of the work which had peppered his stand-up routine for the longest.

He had his demons — on which he spoke with the candor that he used in mouthing off about everything else.  There is no detracting from the power he brought to black people and the extent to which he made sure our image in the white media would never be the same picture of asinine servitude even so-called liberals were perfectly comfortable with.

On his death, Jennifer Pryor, his wife said, “He did not suffer.  He went quickly and at the end there was a smile on his face.”  That’s fitting.  Because he sure put lots of smiles on plenty of faces while he was here.  And created enormous social change while he was at it.

is my charlie parker collection worth selling?

Hi,

I have a collection of 7 vinyl called the definitive charlie parker collection (Vol 1-7). It’s his verve recordings in chronological order. The sleeves have a drawing of a bird with his head and hands morphed onto the image. I’ve done many searches online and I can’t seem to find much at all about this collection at all. I did find vol. 3 listed on one site but there wasn’t a price.

I do like Charlie Parker (what saxophone player doesn’t?), but I’ve never been an adamant listener. I picked these up at a car boot sale a couple of years ago.

The text states that they have been enhanced for stereo from original mono recordings, which leads me to believe it is a 1970s collection…the sleeves are not perfect but still in excellent condition considering their age. The records themselves are mint.

I’m a bit broke hence why I’m even contemplating selling any music at all, I don’t want to sell them if they are of little value..

Any thoughts?
thanks kacky but you don’t mention what collection this is. I really cannot find this set anywhere online, ebay was the first place I checked.

Stocking Fillers to Get You in the Groove

There’s something about Christmas that just seems to bring out the joy of music in us all. Of course, some might say that the more traditional Hymns and Carols, such as ‘Away in a Manger’ or ‘Deck the Halls’ are more appropriate for such a traditional occasion; whist others can’t help but wonder if we’ll still be hearing the voices of Cliff Richard and Noddy Holder in December for years to come.

Music is more important to us than we actually realise; it has certainly played an important role in most cultures, and has been widely associated with improving our sense of well-being and good health, as well as rousing emotions of sadness and joy alike. But surely these researchers, scientists and psychologists are only ever telling us what we already know – that music can be a lot of fun – which is why perhaps this year, we should all consider spreading a little happiness to our loved ones with the Sound of Music Stocking Fillers.

With all the new technology available these days – I-pods, MP3′s and mobile downloads – somehow buying a CD for that special someone might seem a little bit outdated. Even if you’re still mourning the passing of that stylish black vinyl and the rattling cassette tapes, fear not, there are plenty of gifts to invest in that will not only make ideal stocking fillers, but will help to reassure everyone that you’re well and truly ‘with-it’ when it comes to modern technology. The ‘Hymn Book Design IPod Case’ is ideal for those music mad moguls who can’t tear themselves away from their headphones, even at the most inappropriate moments. Perfectly proportioned for these portable devices, those cheeky chaps can give the illusion of good behaviour whilst secretly rocking to their favourite beats. For those who still hoard a nice collection of CD’s or LP’s, then you could treat them to the ‘A-Z CD Dividers’ – ideal stocking fillers with a practical use.

Andy Warhol once claimed that we’d all be famous for fifteen minutes, and although it sounds impossible, there’s actually a little more truth to his statement than you might first think. There are a number of personalised Stocking Fillers for you to choose from this Christmas; including a unique ‘Andy Warhol Style Pop Art Print’. Send in a photograph of your loved one and it can be transformed into a magnificent print. For those real music fans then you could always incorporate their names into their very own Music Legend Personalised Calendar – these extraordinary gifts provide twelve stunning music-themed images where any name can seem as though it is genuinely printed on the side of a guitar, on their own CD, even as the star attraction on concert lights. If you want to make more of a feature of these stocking fillers then you could present someone with their very own ‘Personalised Print’; you might need a rather large stocking to put them in, but they’re sure to bring a smile to the face of any music fan.

If Christmas brings about certain music nostalgia to you and your loved ones, then why not treat someone to a ‘Special Record’ or ‘Gold Disc Twelve Inch’? Complete with any message or song, these golden discs will make them feel like a real singing sensation and it’s a great way to celebrate that special song whether it’s the first dance from a wedding day, the single that was number one when they were born, or just a simple tune that never fails to get them smiling – what more could you want from your stocking fillers?

If you come from a generation when music seemed much better when you were younger, or perhaps you know someone who can’t bear the sound of modern music, then why not invest in stocking fillers that celebrates a particular decade? The ‘You’re a Child of the 60′s when…’ book will not only indulge them in their taste for times gone by, but will also savour those nostalgic moments that may otherwise be forgotten. The ‘You’re a child of the 80′s when…’ book will be a great reminder as to why shoulder pads and hairspray were so popular, but also why they should be left in the past!

The rise in popularity of the X-Factor may well be a good source of inspiration for stocking fillers this Christmas; from magnet packs to pens, badges, T-Shirts and mugs; fans of the X-Factor can be truly spoilt for choice this year. However, if you’re struggling for Stocking Fillers that have a certain X-factor of their own, then why not treat that special someone to a Christmas gift that they’ll never forget? The ‘Recording Studio Gift Box’ will give them the chance to feel like a superstar for the day as they spend time in a professional music studio with a real producer and their very own CD by the end. Of course we can’t promise chart success, but it’s a great way to make sure that someone has a very merry Christmas indeed.

Full Color Prints That You Can Use to Advertise New Products

Advertising is one of the factors propel a new product as the top player in the market.  Although not the sole element to make the commodity a successful production venture, it can make a significant difference in its sales record.  One of the most commonly utilized media for advertising are full color prints.  They not only offer vivid images but affordable visuals, as well.

There are several full color prints to choose from.  They come in different sizes, different page numbers and at different costs.

1.    One-sheet ads

These are the least expensive of the selection.  These are one-sheet, two-page ads that include postcards, flyers and brochures.

Postcards, albeit the smallest of the three, are a popular choice partly due to the offered resilience of its thick paper material, and its small size.  It is now used a lot for direct mailing campaigns.

Flyers and brochures are pretty much the same in terms of stock type but they are easy to distinguish due to their difference in size and folding.  Flyers are the smaller ones and are not folded.  Brochures, on the other hand, are usually folded into several flaps.  The appeal of brochures can be enhanced with the type of fold used, some of which include gate fold and accordion fold.

Since they have bigger spaces and are divided into compartments, brochures can contain more information than flyers and postcards.

2.    Multiple page ads

These include newsletters and catalogs.  Newsletters are a good way to showcase news, product launches, updates and other fresh information.  As for catalogs, they are used for disseminating comprehensive information about the product, even about the company profile and other related and relevant data.

Calendars are also an avenue to advertise but they serve the primary function of date registries rather than materials for advertising.

3.    Large format ads

There are a number of options for large visuals: those that are suitable for outdoor use, and those that are ideal for indoor areas.

For store and establishment interiors, images the size of movie posters are frequently employed since they provide wide and crisp visuals.  Some posters are coated with aqueous solutions that give off a light sheen on the surface of the stock used, while some are inks are ultraviolet (UV) coated.  UV cured posters have intense luster on the surface, and they have water- and fade- resistant prints.  Caution should be taken when opting for UV coated posters since when exposed to spotlights and other very bright light sources, the surface reflects the light so the images cannot be seen properly.

Options for outdoor ad materials include billboards and vinyl banners.  Billboards are those very big ads that you see by the road side.  These have the advantage of visibility and appeal.  Banners are the smaller and cheaper version of billboards.  These are posted with the aid of grommets to which strings are attached.

Both are made of vinyl, a durable and flexible synthetic material that does not easily tear and are waterproof.

Other outdoor ads include adhesive posters which easily stick to smooth and flat surfaces.  There are also window clings which adhere to glass statically.  Both materials can be removed and replaced.

Full color prints are a practical choice for advertising since they have a host of options for stock types and also have a range of price choices to suit your budget.

Singers, Musicians, Bands: Learn 7 Myths About Getting Discovered!

If you want to get anywhere in music, it is imperative that you know the way that the music industry really works; not the way you think it works and not in the fantasy world in which it’s portrayed on TV. The music industry has changed dramatically in the last 5 years alone and continues to change very rapidly as major labels scramble for ways to stop their losses. The old business model of the music industry is dead. It was built on principles and practices of vinyl manufacturing and distribution that no longer apply. But, this is great news for you and all independent artists! It’s now possible for an artist to make a career in the music industry without any help at all from the record labels. So let’s get into the myths that surround the music industry and put an end to these limiting beliefs that are holding back thousands of talented artists.

Myth #1 Someone will discover you without a great recording…

Yes, we’ve all heard the stories of some waitress being discovered while waiting on a record label executive. Or a singer being discovered in some small bar in Texas, or Oklahoma, etc. Yes, these things have happened and will continue to. But if that’s what you’re waiting for, you have a much better chance of winning the lottery. Good luck!

Myth #2 If you email and call enough people, someone will give you a chance…

Why should they? What you don’t realize is that companies get literally thousands of emails everyday with people telling their stories about how they love singing and it’s their dream. Yet, they have no recording, no music up on the internet, no live performances and the only step they’ve taken in their musical careers is to email companies asking for a shot. Sorry, but that’s not the way it works. If you don’t believe in yourself enough to invest in getting a good recording made, don’t expect anyone else to believe in you.

Myth#3 You don’t need a great sounding music demo, any demo will be fine…

Wrong!!! The music demo/master is how you portray yourself to the world. The internet is flooded with good music, so what’s makes you think that a poor recording will stand out against so many great recordings? It won’t! You want to constantly increase your chances of becoming successful, so if possible, get a great sounding music demo/master recording, produced by music industry pros. This will portray you in the best light possible and put your unique talent front and center.

Myth #4 If you have a computer, you can get a program and do you own music demos…

Do you really believe that a program is all there is to producing great sounding music? Think of all the programs you have in your computer. They are tools, just like a music program is. Having a word processor doesn’t make you a writer, and having a drill doesn’t make you a carpenter. But really knowing how to use them properly is what makes the difference between a pro and an amateur. While this might be the right road for a very very small segment, most singers will find that their limited music production skills aren’t even close to the high quality level of their vocal talent that took years to develop. Also, professional music producers will direct and guide the singer during the recording process to deliver her/his best vocal performance. The music producer can come up with vocal harmonies, background vocal ideas, ad libs and whatever else is necessary, including voice processing and pro editing techniques. An experienced engineer in a professional studio with thousands of dollars worth of equipment and hi end microphones will give you the polished sound that will set you above the rest of the crowd. So, do you want a professionally produced recording, or a home demo? Which one will help you build more fans?

Myth #5 You should send your music demo out to record companies in order to get signed…

This is a biggie, because a few short years ago, this was absolutely true. This was the way it was done, though the odds were still astronomical (that’s a whole ‘nother article-too long to cover here). But to understand this now, you have to understand how the internet has changed the music industry forever. Ask yourself this question. If YOU were given a job as A&R over at Sony, and you had to sign an act and make them successful in 6 months or you would lose your job, what would you do? Let’s say you have 1000 CDs in 2 huge boxes in your office, and you know from past experience that at least 95% will be garbage (home recordings, lousy songs, can’t hear the vocals, etc). Would you spend your time listening to those CDs, or would you head straight to the internet and see where the buzz is? Which artists are winning contests and climbing the indy charts? Which artists have 5000 downloads of their songs and doing sold out shows? Which artists have 20,000 people on myspace and built up a huge fan base that constantly sings their praises on the forums? Wouldn’t it be smarter and more profitable to sign an act like that, which already has so much going for them? Absolutely, and that’s why it’s crucial today to bring yourself to the marketplace and make some noise!

Myth#6 The record company will develop you as an artist…

Record companies are looking for artists that have already developed themselves to a certain level, and this is now mostly done in the music production stage of the process. When the artist finally gets into the Internet Marketplace, they should have already established a unique sound and image that represents who they are. Again, that’s where having an experienced music producer and a team of music industry professionals working on your behalf can really benefit you.

Myth#7 If you get a record deal, you’ll be rich…

Sorry to break it to you, but a record deal itself usually doesn’t mean you’ll get rich. If you are fortunate enough to get signed by a major label, realize that this is only the beginning. Many artists are signed but never record, some record but are never released, some are released with no real push or backing by the company and many flop and are dropped by the labels, even though they may have sales in the hundreds of thousands. The last estimate I recently saw said that an artist that goes gold (sales of 500,000) stands to make only around $47,000! This is why so many major artists are choosing not to resign with their record companies, but instead, to release their new CDs independently. An independent artist selling 15,000 of their own CDs can “theoretically” make twice the amount of money as the signed artist selling 500,000 copies! (there are exceptions to this and every other point).

Bottom Line:

There are now more opportunities for singers and artists than ever before in history! The artists that succeed will be the ones that wanted it more, and were willing to sacrifice more in order to achieve success. You have to get yourself into the “game”! And of course, once you’re in the “game”, the talented ones will rise to the top!
