Paramount Drops Blu-ray DVD Technology

An unfortunate truth in the area of TV technology is that the best technology is not always the one that triumphs when two competing technologies go into competition with each other. The history of TV technology is littered with examples of this. The one that most people are most familiar with is the format war between the Betamax and VHS video cassette tape formats. Even though VHS won that particular format war, many people have argued that Betamax was actually the superior format. A less prominent example can be seen in the early Laser Disc video format that was introduced at about the same time as the VHS and Betamax tape formats. Laser Discs were essentially primitive DVD’s that were about the same size as an old fashioned vinyl LP record. Even though DVD’s are the preferred format over video cassettes now, the two video cassette formats soundly defeated the Laser Disc format when it came to consumer video.

Right now we can see another example of this unfolding with the High Def DVD format war. There are two formats in this war that are both vying for control over the market. One format is called Blu-ray and it’s backed by Sony and a number of other computer hardware manufacturers and movie studios. Its rival is called HD DVD, which was invented by Toshiba and is backed by Microsoft and a few other movie studios. Both of these formats are based on similar laser technology, both use discs that are the same size as standard DVD’s, and neither format can be played on the other format’s players.

The Blu-ray format is the superior one in terms of data storage capacity. It can store about twenty five gigabytes per side of a single disc for a total of fifty gigabytes per disc. By contrast, the HD DVD format can store about fifteen gigabytes per side of a disc for a total of only about thirty gigabytes. Twenty gigabytes per disc is an extremely big difference between the two formats. To be fair though, HD DVD has some proprietary interactive features that Blu-ray doesn’t have.

In spite of Blu-ray’s technical superiority- at least as a storage media for computers- and the fact that it has been outselling HD DVD by two to one in terms of number of discs sold, Blu-ray has failed to win the format war. That’s because a format war is waged through propaganda, forming alliances, and pricing tactics at least as much as it’s waged through technological expertise.

The latest blow to Blu-ray’s superior position has been the decision of Paramount to release high def DVD’s only in the HD DVD format. Previous to this announcement, Paramount had been releasing its titles in both formats, but now it has taken a pay off in order to market and produce HD DVD exclusively.

This has been a blow to consumers and retailers as well as the Blu-ray format. Retailers who are currently selling Paramount titles published on Blu-ray won’t be getting restocks of those discs, and Paramount has even made an about face on announcements that it will publish recently released movies on Blu-ray.

While this move may be good for HD DVD, and Paramount may have gotten a short term profit from it, Paramount’s reputation is sure to be damaged. Perhaps even irreparably.

Electronic Words: The Future of Reading

Only one or two days ago I was in my fathers cellar, going thru my old storage of books making an attempt to choose which ones I had more of a deep attachment too. I was moving across states with the aid of a friend and his pickup, so I had to tame my inner pack rat and take just what I felt was critical, things I might actually remember not taking and regret it. Over my 20+ years I have picked up a far quantity of books, there was a point in my teen years where I could devour 2 or three a week. Such was the life of a lonesome nerd.

After I filled 2 cardboard boxes with my most favourite stories, I could not avoid thinking about my pals new “toy”-an Amazon ‘Kindle’. An ebook rising in appreciation that downloads books directly from Amazon’s Whispernet.

The newest Kindle model, Kindle DX costs nearly $500, I could not believe he was willing to drop that kind of scratch to read the same books he could buy for less than a quarter of that cost. How could it most likely mimic the intimate connection you can get with a good paper paged novel? Particularly older ones, with yellowed pages and a thick, musty smell.

Ebooks had a tiny surge in renown in the early 2000′s, but many were only programed in one format. So if you were the owner of an Ebook, and your favourite novel just came out on a rivals Ebook-you would just have to cope with it.

Due to the Kindle’s acceptance, many big companies decided to try to join the competition. Barnes & Noble introduced they are “Nook”, which is the first to be primarily based on the ‘Android’ platform, and has a MicroSD enlargement slot for additional storage. Except for being much cheaper Kindle alternative, it can be hacked to add applications like Pandora, a twitter client, Google Reader, Facebook, and a web browser.

In France, Bookeen released the ultra light Cybook Opus, featuring a paper-like high contrast appearance that will basically be read in direct daylight. When the Cybook Opus is connected up to your personal computer it registers as a typical USB mass storage gizmo so that you can simply copy books without special drivers.

With the releasing of Apple’s iPad, came the releasing of the iBooks application. Aside from having all of the features of the Kindle, it could also insert video. Still lacks USB ports, however.

While my pal raved about his costly, tiny, electronic library, I could not help thinking how dumb it was to think that a small, thin gadget able to download books could ever replace hundreds of years of paper paged history. It only took up less room, you could download any book you wanted whenever you wanted, generations yet to come would certainly be cheaper and better quality…I stopped my train of thought and took a close look at my stacks of physical books, all together they weighed a ton and took up so much space. Will this generation see the demise of broadcast word? I am sure folk in the sixties could not imagine life without their favourite 12-inch vinyl records, now those self same people carry the whole discography of their favorite artist on an itty bitty iPod.

ten years back T.V’s were chunky monstrosities, now they are paper thin with such amazing quality you can count the pores on somebody’s's jaw. 10 years gone Nintendo games were still pixelated and featured squat characters with jerky movements, now it’s essentially interactive animation. In ten years, will my ‘bookcase’ just become ‘shelves’? Featuring one PDF and whatever knick knacks I throw on there to lose the empty space? What will happen to libraries? My fave used book store?

As I eventually closed the cardboard boxes and pressed down the packing tape, I could not avoid thinking how convenient it might be to just slip my favourite book ‘The Stand’ in my back pocket while having the rest of my library stored on my C : drive.

convert wma to mp3?

I recently inherited a large (500gb+) collection of music. I have the storage media but I have saved all as WMA files and would like to convert it to mp3 in a drive-to-drive copy so I can share it with my family and others. Ideally, I would distribute the HD for copying and retain my cherished WMA’s for personal use on my HD. Additionally, I have a bunch of vinyl I have to record. 1)Where to find a turntable compatible with a PC? Specs? 2) How many steps, equipment($) involved in converting vinyl-WMA-mp3?

How would you describe 500 gigabytes of storage to your grandma?

Suppose you were to show your 80-something little old grandma (who is not tech savvy) your new 500GB external hard drive. How would you describe the amount of data that could fit on such a device in terms of information storage mediums that she would be familiar with (such as vinyl records, encyclopedias, songs, etc)?
